Your BMW’s transmission is tough and built to last. It does, however, require regular services to keep it working efficiently. Parts can become damaged or wear out, which poses problems for the transmission. If you’re in the area of Madison, WI, your BMW dealer can fix that transmission problem for you. These are a few signs that you may need a transmission repair.

Signs You Need a Transmission Repair at Your BMW Dealer

Your Transmission Is Slipping

When your transmission computer shifts the gears, your car should remain in that gear until the computer shifts it again. Transmission slipping is a situation where your gears will unexpectedly shift without warning. An automatic transmission will usually shift back to the previous gear, and this could result in your car suddenly shifting from drive to park.

Slipping gears can easily result in an accident, particularly if you’re driving at high speed. If this happens, we advise pulling over ASAP and calling our service department. Our highly-trained technicians will examine your transmission and find and fix the cause of the problem.

Rough Shifting

You shouldn’t feel anything when your transmission shifts gears. A BMW transmission is designed to smoothly transition from gear to gear. If you feel a lurch or jerk when the gears shift, or you hear clunking or other strange sounds, you have a transmission problem. There are several possible causes for this, but the most common is a lack of transmission fluid.

Transmission fluid has several functions, one of which is to provide the hydraulic power that allows your gears to shift. A lack of transmission fluid reduces this power and makes it more difficult for your gears to move. In addition, transmission fluid isn’t consumed as it works. You can only have low transmission fluid if there’s a leak. We’ll examine the transmission to find the leak, and new fluid should fix the rough shifting.

Check Engine Light

The check engine light comes on in response to any problem in your engine. It’s connected to a network of sensors that spread throughout your engine. These sensors will send a warning to your car’s computer if they detect a problem with the component they’re attached to. When this happens, your computer will log the error, and the light will come on.

This light also illuminates due to problems in the transmission. Your engine and transmission are linked and work together to enable your car to move. If your transmission isn’t working correctly, your engine will work harder to try and compensate. This extra effort can cause wear and tear on your engine. We’ll use our diagnostic system to find the problem and repair it.
