The 2019 BMW i3 is an attempt to reinvent the electric vehicle, and it’s a successful attempt. More than a car with a reduced carbon footprint, the i3 is a BMW first and foremost, and you’ll understand that as soon as you sit behind the wheel.
Find out how BMW is changing the way you drive with our overview of the 2019 BMW i3 below.
Highlights of the 2019 BMW i3
Performance
The 2019 i3 is designed for everyday use and for those who want a reliable vehicle that can perform while keeping their carbon footprint low. Behind the wheel of this EV, you’ll get a full 153 miles on a full charge of the 42kWh high voltage lithium-ion battery (charges in 40 minutes at one of the 58,000 public stations, 6 hours at home). This AC engine puts out an impressive 170 horsepower.
To give you uncompromised stability and maneuvering power, the i3 has Dynamic Stability Control, Brake Fade Compensation, Brake Energy Recuperation, Start-off Assistant, and Dynamic Traction Control and cornering assistance.
Design
BMW had some unique considerations for building an all-electric car. To maintain a higher performance level, they used Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic. The overall size is modest, but every bit of available space has been optimized by removing unnecessary design pieces from standard sedans, such as the B-pillar. The seats are positioned in such a way that creates more head and legroom than you might expect.
Available luxury touches stud the interior, and they’re just as environmentally friendly as its electric power. You’ll enjoy eucalyptus wood, olive leaf tanned leather, fabric made from recycled bottles, and a dashboard and door trims made from Kenaf (a type of hemp). All of this is assembled in a carbon neutral factory.
Safety
Because the 2019 i3 is a little more minimalistic than a typical sedan, there were some different considerations when it came to the integration of safety. In the case of an accident, a Battery Safety Terminal is activated, which disconnects the starter, fuel pump, and battery, unlocks all of the doors, and turns on your hazard lights. An emergency request button with an automatic collision notification has also been integrated to ensure that you get help right away, even if you can’t make the call.
